Gian Piero Gasperini has mused that Inter ‘immediately rejected’ his ideas, as he prepares to face them with Genoa this weekend.

The 55-year-old endured a brief and unsuccessful spell as Coach of the Nerazzurri at the start of the 2011-12 campaign, but was sacked after only five games in charge.

Now back with Genoa, the tactician has mused on ‘feeling at home’ once more ahead of playing host to La Beneamata this Week 20.

“In Genoa I feel at home, but this is not a job that you get to choose, the city chooses us,” Gasperini began in conversation with La Repubblica.

“It is the people who have decided that I should return to coach in this city. Inter had immediately rejected the way I play football.

“The President, the criticism and the environment in general regarded me as thinking irresponsibly, because I wanted to play with three at the back.

“But after Mourinho it was necessary, a different style of play seemed like the best way to move forward. And in fact, now with Mazzarri, Inter are playing with a three-man defence.

“Inter’s turning point came with Calciopoli, which destroyed Juventus. Inter without that would have continued not to win.

“Then, after Mourinho, the trend is back to normal, but as a Coach [Rafa] Benitez [sacked midway through 2010-11] deserved credibility. And to me, then, they only gave me two months.”
