Inter have confirmed that midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan suffered a muscle issue after being forced off the pitch in the Champions League semi-final second leg.

The 34-year-old Armenian midfielder has been a core part of Simone Inzaghi’s squad in the Lombardy capital this season, evolving from a winger into a deeper role in the centre of the pitch.

Mkhitaryan has seen over 3300 minutes of action across 48 total appearances this season and his forced substitution in the 44th minute of Inter’s 1-0 win over Milan in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final clash immediately caused concern.

As announced by Inter, a round of medical tests today confirmed that Mkhitaryan suffered a muscle strain to the anterior rectus of his left thigh, or his quadricep. He will be closely monitored on a daily basis as he works on his recovery.

The Armenian veteran has scored five goals and provided two assists across all competitions this season and started in 11 of Inter’s 12 matches in the Champions League.
