Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne was distraught after the 1-1 draw with Roma doomed their Scudetto hopes, saluting the home fans in tears.

His penalty had given them the lead just 11 minutes in at the packed Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

However, coach Luciano Spalletti’s decisions will come under fire, as he decided to substitute all his attacking players to defend the one-goal lead.

It didn’t work, as Stephan El Shaarawy scored the 91st-minute equaliser.

The final whistle arrived to jeers from the crowd, who saw their team once again fumble a lead in a big game on home turf and choke just when the Serie A title seemed within reach.

Coming off the back of a heavy home defeat to Fiorentina, this was a devastating blow and Insigne burst into tears.

He was the last player to leave when Napoli saluted their supporters, well aware his chance at silverware had gone in his final season with the club.

Insigne has already signed with MLS club Toronto FC from July 1, when he will be a free agent.

  1. Should have already sent him to Toronto. He only scores when he takes someones penalty kick. Save your tears. Hope you enjoy Canada.

  2. It’s not over yet.

Strange this modern mindset nonsense where people (and writers) change their mind about what’s going to happen from game to game.

Yes, they’ve given themselves a mountain to climb now, but of you’re going to give up with 5 games to go, you shouldn’t be playing football.

  3. Fully agree why are we giving up as a napolitana! We are missing opportunities but its not over yet. Insignia played well today but he needs to go. Get rid of fabian too shocking lately our left back is 21 and got done over many times Di lorenzo is missed Napoli to win away and both Milan teams to drop points next week and it back on

  4. You all complaining, what happened to Napoli biggest signing oshimen never showing up when needed. Insigne is not the problem it’s the rest of team and especially owner. Lotta insigne haters out there.
