The Italian international has been out since November after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament, but is now nearing a comeback.

“I experienced the atmosphere of matches again, both at Verona and at the San Paolo against Verona,” Insigne revealed in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

“It was a pleasant feeling, I needed that.

“These months were hard, suffering waiting, in pain and not just in the physical sense. But that’s how it goes.

“I have a lot of people to thank [surgeon] Pier Paolo Mariani, those who stood by me, the club, the Coach, my teammates, my family.

“But when I was doing physical therapy, I was alone. I used to wonder: how long?

“I did it quickly, I gave it everything I had, and I still have other things to give, but I feel good and I’m ready.”

The Partenopei have fallen to fourth in Serie A with Insigne out, but the attacker insists his teammates have done well.

“Now we’re entering the crucial phase [of the season], the decisive games. We have direct clashes in the League, plus the Europa League and the Coppa Italia semi-final.

“I’ve seen some great football, a team which has had inevitable difficulties because at this club you play every three days and sometimes you pay for that.

“But there was a historic victory in Doha [in the Supercoppa final against Juventus], it was a success against the reigning Italian champions, who will almost certainly be champions again in 10 games.

“The last few results have gone against us, but they can’t take away from the quality of this fantastic squad.

“We’re alive, and we’ll prove it. The next game is always the most important, so we must focus primarily on Roma, then we’ll think about other games.

“Priority is given to the next challenge.”
