He was teammates with Verratti and Lorenzo Insigne going back to Pescara in Serie B, so does he think the midfielder will return to the Peninsula for Juventus or Inter?

“I think it’s unlikely. When we’re on international duty and he talks to us about Paris, he does it with the eyes of someone in love. In France they adore him both for the way he plays and how he is as a person.”

Immobile knows all about experiences abroad, having struggled at Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla before returning to Serie A for Lazio.

“They were very different times. I arrived at Dortmund when an era was coming to an end. It was the team that had played in the Champions League Final and won the Bundesliga.

“I had to settle in during this period of change for the club and it was natural to run into a few difficulties. In Seville the experience was very good, both in terms of lifestyle and professionally. I got to know a very technical style of football where every club focuses only on winning, without settling.

“I think this season Sevilla can win the Liga title.”

Immobile and Verratti are part of a new generation of impressive Italy players developing ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

“Andrea Belotti is worth a great deal and it’s no surprise Torino slapped a €100m release clause on him. It’s a message to all those who have him in their sights for the future.

“He is a modern centre-forward and doesn’t stop for a second, chases every ball. That’s how you play in Europe. I get along great with Belotti and we complete each other perfectly. Above all, we feel a strong responsibility that we are representing Italy up there.

“Italy has more and more talent at its disposal and I see an excellent future for our young players. Just look at the progress of Federico Bernardeschi, Danilo Cataldi or Federico Chiesa.”
