The Rosanero saw their club record nine-round unbeaten run ended with last week’s 4-3 defeat to Fiorentina, but Paulo Dybala returned and was immediately on target in a 1-1 draw.

“The fact remains we put in a great performance against a strong side like Roma,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We should’ve had more quality on the counter in the second half, where we got the final pass wrong and were unable to make the most of those opportunities.

“We allowed Roma practically nothing and only conceded on a set play. It’s a shame we were unable to go 2-1 up with Dybala when we had the chance.

“Sometimes we are too frenetic and get the final ball wrong, but our season has been exceptional in every respect and I encourage this mentality of always taking a step forwards rather than back.”

Palermo have shown an alarming tendency to start very strong and then fall away in the second half.

“We pressed them high up the field from the start and couldn’t keep that intensity up for 90 minutes. In the first 20 minutes after the restart we should’ve done better coming out of defence and misplaced fewer passes.

“That was the plan, but the plan doesn’t always work out. It’s a shame, there’s a bitter taste in the mouth as with a bit more luck we could’ve taken home three points.

“Our forwards try to bring unpredictability in the final third with the runs of Rigoni, midfielders and full-backs.”

Dybala went off injured in the final stages, but Iachini assured “he hadn’t trained much this week and was tired. It doesn’t seem to be anything serious.”
