Milan have qualified for the Champions League semi-final for the first time since 2007, and this is important in both a sporting and economic sense.

The Rossoneri edged out a 2-1 aggregate win over Serie A league leaders Napoli in the quarter-final, a sign of the team’s resurgence after a difficult decade.

Stefano Pioli’s side will face the winner of Inter-Benfica for a spot in the final, setting up one of the tensest Derby della Madonnina clashes in a long time.

As highlighted by Gianluca Di Marzio, Milan will receive an extra €12.5m from UEFA for qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals, bringing their total earnings from the competition this season to €83.91m, having received €9.6m from the Round of 16 and €10.6m from the quarter-finals.

The added resources could have an important effect on Milan’s summer transfer window, allowing them to invest a little more heavily and try to close the gap with league leaders Napoli.
