The striker was dropped by Argentina last week in favour of Inter hitman Mauro Icardi.
“Gonzalo always loves to play for the Seleccion,” Jorge Higuain told TyC Sports.
“It’s not true that he bailed. He never bails. The call-up depends on the Coach. France came calling to see if he wanted to play for them, but he said no because he loves Argentina.

“Gonzalo, Paulo Dybala and Icardi defend themselves from criticism with their career trajectories. Sometimes the ball doesn’t want to go in, but they are all dying to score a goal for Argentina.
“People complain and say they are millionaires, but it’s not an easy life. Don’t forget these same players were on a plane than 20 days later crashed into a mountain.”
He was referring to the plane that had carried the Argentina squad for an international game and three weeks later crashed, almost wiping out Brazilian club Chapecoense.
“Nowadays society tries to punish players with memes and harsh criticism. My son has to live with this. He has been playing for the most important clubs in Europe for years.
“Young people know how these memes work, it’s all a game to them. You see it from club Presidents and the guy who sells hot dogs on the corner.
“Some of these people send 200 messages per day and I say, do people not work? It’s part of everyday life now, so we all have to learn to live with it.”
