Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain admits “I thought about leaving football” when his mother fell ill.

The Argentinian has scored 23 times for the Bianconeri this season, the fifth season in a row he’s hit at least 20, but he could have retired early.

“I thought about leaving football,” Higuain revealed in an interview with TNT Sports.

“It happened not long ago, when I learned that my mother was ill. It was a horrible moment, but it was her who asked me to continue and that gave me strength.

“The world of football treats players as disposable goods. When you stop you’re not worth anything anymore.

“What really matters is the affection from the people who really love you. Fortunately I have beautiful people alongside me who will be with me for life.

“My girlfriend and daughter are my most beautiful goal, without a doubt the most important. When you find out you’re going to be a father everything else takes a back seat.”

Higuain has been harshly criticised, particularly in Argentina, for missing chances in big games.

“The truth is that the best are usually criticised, so I’m calm. People attack you for a missed goal, but forget the 300 you scored before.

“The World Cup? We’re all ready and we'll do our best to make our people happy.”
