The Nerazzurri are in contention for Europa League qualification this term despite inconsistent runs of form during a year in which Erick Thohir took over the club from Massimo Moratti.

“This year was particular because in the beginning there was great uncertainty about the new project,” Hernanes, who arrived in January, has reflected to Tuttosport today.

“Much will depend on how we close out the season – we must do it in a certain way, it will give us confidence and the fans too.

“I am convinced that in two years we can return to fighting for the Scudetto.”

Before thoughts of that, La Beneamata head out to Parma on Saturday in a crunch tie that could determine who takes fifth spot in the League and with it the final automatic qualification berth for the Europa League.

“Yes Parma will be a final, because it is a direct clash for Europe. It is critical to give credibility to Thohir’s project.

“To not get to Europe would be a failure to me. Inter, technically, are very strong. However, we must find consistency against smaller sides who we have stumbled against too many times, particularly at San Siro.

“We are strong but not yet mature – we need a little time to create a mix of experienced and young players and once we have found that consistency that we currently lack, clubs will return to fearing San Siro when they face Inter.”

Hernanes was asked about scrutiny that Walter Mazzarri finds himself under.

“He is the right Coach to develop this project. He is very good in his work on the field but also with his management of the group.”

The Brazilian will be joined at the club in the summer by Nemanja Vidic.

“I hope that above all he really wants to embrace this project and that he has the desire. Like how I do. Yes, I came here to win the title, that trophy I am missing in order to feel fulfilled.

“I have been given strong emotions when with Lazio for winning the Coppa Italia against Roma.

“In Rome I wanted to win the League, and that would have been something grand and historic, but I realised that I could not do so and I decided to accept Inter’s offer.”

The Prophet will reunite with his former Lazio teammates on May 10 for Week 37.

“Yes, because I can see so many friends. Football is like this, you can go away for one day, change phone number and you lose many contacts.

“Now I am settling in here at Inter very quickly, but I think it will be a strange feeling, perhaps, to face my former teammates. It will seem to me like a training match at Formello…”
