Former Juventus goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar remains in intensive care after a brain haemorrhage, but is ‘not in life-threatening danger.’

The 52-year-old was on vacation in Croatia with his family when he was taken ill and rushed to hospital last week.

His wife Annearie van der Sar is at his bedside in Croatia and gave an important update via the official Ajax website.

“Edwin is still in the intensive care unit, but is stable. He is not in life-threatening danger. Every time we get to visit him, he’s communicative.

“We have to wait patiently to see how this situation will develop.”

Van der Sar played for Juventus from 1999 to 2001, also representing Ajax, Fulham and Manchester United.

Following retirement in 2011, he returned to Ajax in a variety of roles, most recently as director general since 2016.
