Pep Guardiola insisted both penalties were the right decision and Barcelona fully deserved to knock Milan out of the Champions League.

The Rossoneri were beaten 3-1, but it was still 1-1 when Alessandro Nesta tugged Sergio Busquets’ shirt to give away a soft penalty, as he was also being shoved by Carles Puyol.

“When there is a tug on a shirt, you award a penalty,” was Guardiola’s response to questions on the spot-kick.

“In the first half we played with three at the back to create more scoring opportunities, so by the end we had 21 shots on goal against three for Milan.

“We defended well and after going 2-1 up, we returned to a four-man defence to control the game.

“Lionel Messi is a wonderful player and we have the great fortune of having him in our squad.”
