Udinese coach Luca Gotti was happy to end the winless ‘nightmare’ against Roma and has claimed the Friuli were ‘progressing continuously’.

The 2-0 win against 10-men Giallorossi ended a run of nine games without a win and Gotti was admittedly relieved to see three points on the board.

“I had the perception that the team have developed over time, remained healthy and progressed continuously,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “This win has been missing for too long.

“Not winning for a long time had become a nightmare for me. Sometimes a team needs the tonic results, to know they are on the right path.

“It’s not easy to understand that the path is right if the results don’t come.”

Gotti claimed his players were playing better before Diego Perotti was suspended and could see the Friuli feared losing the lead against 10 men.

“I liked my team until 1-0 and when we were 11 against 11,” he added. “When Roma had a man sent off, the fear of winning arrived.

“Elementary things went wrong. I didn’t like the second period of the first half. Then over time, we realised we could manage, and the situation became calmer.”

Rodrigo de Paul contributed with two assists and Gotti claims he is ready for the big League and praised his colleague in midfield, Seko Fofana.

“He is now ready for the top competitions. The mezzala is his role, it allows him to exploit all his qualities.

“He is becoming more and more consistent, giving great signals from a psychological point of view, growing with every game.”

“Like De Paul, I think that Fofana would also be ready for the Champions League or close to that level.”

Udinese have the chance to distance themselves from the relegation battle in their next three games against Genoa, SPAL and Sampdoria.

“We play for our season in the next three games, we had to preserve some energies. But in a game like this, it’s good to be able to put your characteristics in the game.”
