Gonzalo Villar returned to Spain for Getafe and lashed out at his experience in Serie A, criticising Roma and Jose Mourinho, while accusing Sampdoria of ‘not paying players for months.’

The midfielder is still owned by Roma following the €5m purchase from Elche in January 2020, but never made his mark in Italy.

He was sent out on loan to Getafe in 2022 and then to Sampdoria this summer, but interrupted that spell for a return to Getafe this month on loan with option to buy for €3.5m.

If Italian football did not take to Villar, then he can say the feeling was very much mutual.

“It was a fantastic experience at Roma, up until a person arrived that we all know,” Villar told COPE.

“I don’t want to talk about him, I prefer to stay quiet. After his arrival, my adventure with Roma was interrupted and that took me into some difficult situations.”

The reference was obviously to coach Mourinho, who froze Villar and others out of the squad for not being part of his plans.

The loan at Sampdoria did not really go any better and he struggled for playing time, but issues off the field were even more concerning.

“I played a fair amount, but the financial situation was complicated. I wasn’t paid for several months. It is the most difficult situation I’ve experienced in professional football.”

Sampdoria are in the process of trying to find a new buyer, but patron Massimo Ferrero is refusing to sell or acknowledge that the club is in dire financial straits.

  1. Yup as a professional you must delivered the results, sad you were not good enough for either teams, why point fingers at others.
