Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez admits Atalanta’s passage to the Champions League Round of 16 “will remain in the history of football and this club.”

La Dea were in their first ever Champions League campaign, lost the opening three games, yet still managed to reach the knockouts after tonight’s 3-0 victory away to Shakhtar Donetsk.

“It’s just incredible, there are no words for this unique sensation I am feeling right now,” Papu told Sky Sport Italia.

“It will remain in the history of football and of this club. I think it’ll also stay long in the memory of everyone who was in the stadium tonight.

“All of us here at Atalanta came from humble roots, nobody here can be called world class or a superstar name, but we achieved this result through hard work and sacrifice.

“It is similar to Atalanta in the 1990s, when La Dea were always challenging for Europe. This has been building, as ever since we finished fourth in Serie A, this group has had a very precise approach to its football.”
