Milan veteran Olivier Giroud underlined his excitement for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar and underlined his and France’s ambitions for the tournament.
The 36-year-old French forward has proved himself an invaluable part of Stefano Pioli’s squad in the Lombardy capital this season, scoring nine goals and providing five assists in 19 games across Serie A and the Champions League. He had hardly featured for France since Euro 2020 last year and at times seemed at risk of missing out on the World Cup.
Speaking to France TV Sport, Giroud first discussed his mindset heading into the World Cup in Qatar.
“I’m coming to this appointment with the mood of a player who will surely play this international competition for the last time. I’m very motivated, as if it were my first time. I want to enjoy every moment. And, of course, we are eager to defend our title.”
The 36-year-old touched on how it felt to receive the call-up to the World Cup.
“In life, as they say, nothing is given to you. You have to go and get what you want. I was keen not to close the page with France after the failure of the European Championship in 2021.
“So, I’m very proud. I hope to finish well. I was disappointed not to have been called up after the European Championships and that gave me even more desire and motivation to return to the national team.”
Finally, Giroud discussed Thierry Henry’s goal scoring record with France and his desire to overtake the Arsenal legend in Qatar.
“It’s two goals to equal him and three to surpass him. It would be a shame to stop at two. But talking seriously, it’s already an honour to be second behind him.
“Deschamps will need everyone during this World Cup and when he calls me I will make sure I am ready to respond and try to be decisive for the team.”
The 36-year-old Giroud has made 114 caps for France since his debut in November 2011, scoring 49 goals and providing 13 assists in that time.
