Roma are closing in on signing Italian international Alberto Gilardino, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

The striker, who is owned by Genoa, could move to the capital in a swap deal involving Marco Borriello.

The latter spent last season on loan at Marassi and the Grifone are keen on keeping the 31-year-old centre-forward.

Gilardino has caught the attention of a number of clubs after he scored 13 goals in 36 games on loan at Bologna in 2012-13.

The two outfits have already begun working on the exchange, but the deal will reportedly hinge on the personal terms of Borriello.

The former Milan man, who currently earns €5.4m before tax, will have to accept a pay cut if he wants to keep wearing the Rossoblu of the Grifone.
