Sampdoria Coach Marco Giampaolo credits the club’s fans for their extraordinary comeback win over Sassuolo.

The Blucerchiati were 2-0 down at home to Eusebio Di Francesco’s team with just seven minutes remaining, but goals by Fabio Quagliarella and two by Luis Muriel completed an astonishing victory at the Luigi Ferraris.

“I expected to come up against a Sassuolo who were very attentive to the details, with a team behind the ball,” Giampaolo commented.

“I thought they would be concentrated and because of that I thought it would be a hard game.

“I have to say that the team never lost its clarity, even when we went to restart the game two goals behind.

“However, without the extraordinary support of our crowd we would never have won.

“It’s a victory for the team and the crowd.”

Giampaolo then expressed sympathy for counterpart Di Francesco, who stated it was his own team’s ineptitude rather than Samp’s dominance that enabled the game to be turned on its head.

“We found ourselves two goals down undeservedly. I understand Eusebio because when you are winning 2-0 with eight minutes left it is difficult to talk about a defeat.

“I am trying to put myself in his shoes, I understand his bitterness.”
