Germany threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at home to England ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Italy.

The World Cup holders seemed a shadow of their former selves in Berlin this evening, despite going two goals up.

Ex-Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez proved he’s got his scoring touch back, seeing an early angled drive incorrectly ruled offside before eventually nodding in a chipped assist from Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira.

Toni Kroos drilled in at the near post, aided by an injury that saw England goalkeeper Jack Butland stretchered off.

England fought back after the hour mark, as first Harry Kane performed a Cruyff turn to prepare his snooker shot into the far bottom corner, then Jamie Vardy scored his debut goal with a splendid back-heel flick from six yards.

The momentum and confidence visibly drained out of Germany as time wore on and in stoppages a corner found the head of Eric Dier to turn it around completely.

Germany will host Italy at the AllianzArena in Munich on Tuesday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT)
