Genoa are emerging as strong contenders to take Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa on loan from Inter.

The Brazilian forward cost €29.5m from Santos over the summer, but has made only one 16-minute appearance for the club against Inter.

His agent protested he would not go to a club of a lower level than the Nerazzurri after links with Chievo, Pescara, Empoli and Spanish side Las Palmas.

However, Mediaset Premium are reporting that Genoa are new contenders and this opens up a different scenario.

Genoa have made their reputation in recent years for revitalising the careers of players and helping others settle into Serie A.

Among those who benefited from the Grifone treatment are Suso, M’Baye Niang, Cristian Ansaldi and Diego Perotti.

Gabigol could fulfil a need if Genoa sell centre-forward Leonardo Pavoletti to Napoli next month.

In turn, Inter want to get an option on midfielder Tomas Rincon, who has been linked with Juventus.
