Gennaro Gattuso said Milan “have nothing to lose” after the first leg defeat to Arsenal in the Europa League.

The second leg is at the Emirates on Thursday and the Rossoneri’s chances of qualification are slim.

“We know that we have to do much better than the first leg, but we are proud to play in a beautiful stadium against a great team. We are a little tired, but we have to give it a go,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We were born ready. We know it’s difficult, I’d be a hypocrite to say otherwise. In football and sport in general, the best thing is beating the odds. We didn’t come here for a day trip and we didn’t underestimate Arsenal at San Siro, they simply played better than we did. Tomorrow we hope it’ll be different.

“I am not someone who gives the team big speeches before a game. I already stress them out shouting at them for 90 minutes during a match, I can’t start talking even when they ought to relax.

“You cannot buy experience at the supermarket. When you face a side like Arsenal, those issues can emerge, but the important thing is to realise where we went wrong. Tomorrow we have nothing to lose.

“Henrikh Mkhitaryan has improved since he arrived in England, as he puts more physical strength into it and not just technique.

“We are missing Ignazio Abate and Davide Calabria due to injuries and they are two important players for us. There is fatigue in the squad, I won’t lie, but that’s not an alibi and we’ll see who is in the best shape tomorrow.”

Milan earned a last-gasp 1-0 win away to Genoa on Sunday thanks to Andre Silva’s debut Serie A goal.

“You seem to think Andre Silva is ‘reborn’ because he scored a goal, but the truth is he hasn’t played much under me. He is young and at times showed what he needed to, as he needs time to adapt to a totally different style of football.

“In general, we do not finish off many of our scoring opportunities and need to get the final ball right more often. Nikola Kalinic moves very well, he just needs some confidence to put it in the back of the net. Goals fuel strikers and they need them to feel good.

“I am most glad to see that when a player in the locker room is a bit depressed, the others rush to reassure and help them. That’s a good sign.”
