It has been a truly traumatic month for Rino, whose sister died after a long illness.

“Life and especially football has given me so much more than I gave to it. It made me a man. In life, you always think of your parents and family first, so naturally what happened is hard to accept.

“I have such passion for football, I know that I can’t let go even for a second,” Gattuso told RAI Sport.

“Anyone who does this job must respect it, because we are lucky. This is why I get angry when I don’t see passion, as I have no regrets about my career and that’s what I want these players to say too. I believe in the God of Football, when you do it right, you reap what you sow and it comes back to you.”

Gattuso was overhead telling his players after the final whistle that they would now target the Champions League places.

“It is our duty to play these last 12 Serie A games with respect. It’s our duty to try, we can’t just think we’ve achieved our objective and give up. It’s tough, there is a big gap, but we have to try our best.”
