Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis insists their Coppa Italia triumph against Juventus was ‘in the air, as many things changed since Gennaro Gattuso arrived.’

The match ended 0-0 on the night in Rome, thanks largely to Gigi Buffon heroics and the woodwork, but the Partenopei won on penalties for their sixth Coppa trophy.

“It was in the air. Since Rino Gattuso arrived, many things changed here and everyone came together around him, around the club, around the idea of Napoli,” De Laurentiis told RAI Sport.

“After all, at the end of the day, Napoli are the only club capable of contrasting Juventus for this title. We beat them in the Coppa Italia in 2012, we beat them in the Supercoppa, and so far we haven’t been able to beat them only in Serie A.”

Because of social distancing, the players were meant to walk up and take their own medals from the stand, but instead both Presidents De Laurentiis and Andrea Agnelli went up to hand them over.

“We had decided to hand over the medals to the two squads, but I got distracted, so Juve went and got the medals themselves. I had said to Andrea beforehand, whatever happens, let’s go together, and he said absolutely.”
