The Argentine forward’s move from Juventus was confirmed on Thursday, with the 30-year-old arriving at San Siro on an initial loan deal.

He joins the club alongside centre-back Mattia Caldara, viewed as one of the most exciting young defenders in Italian football.

“I am happy. They are important players,” Gattuso said in reaction to Milan’s double signing.

“Mattia is an interesting young player. We all know Gonzalo, but we are a team.

“We need to make them feel at home and feel part of the group.

“Then, I am sure they will help us to have an important season.”

Higuain scored 55 goals during his two-year spell with Juve and Gattuso described the Rossoneri’s ability to attract players of his calibre as ‘a source of pride.’

“For us it should be a source of pride. When you speak to players, nobody tells you they don’t want to come.

“This is a club with great history and organisation. We’ve gone through four or five years where we haven’t found consistency.

“But I think that with this team, these young boys and players like Higuain and Caldara, we can do well.

“This is a team that has a desire to work and never gives up. Pipita can help us make a jump in quality.”

Despite the arrival of Higuain, Gattuso says he won’t be moving away from his preferred 4-3-3 formation.

“It won’t push me to change formation. The foundation will be 4-3-3, but it’s not ruled out that we’ll look for something else as well.

“I was hoping that the club would do something. I have spoken a lot to Higuain, just like I have done to other players in these months.”
