The Grifone thrashed Giampiero Ventura’s side 5-1 at Stadio Luigi Ferraris to move within one point of city rivals Sampdoria in the sixth and final Europa League spot.

Though it’s unclear whether his side would actually be allowed to compete in Europe were they to get there, Gasperini insists they will keep fighting.

“We absolutely had to win to stay in the hunt,” the former Inter Coach admitted, speaking to Sky after the match.

“All our rivals for the Europa League won, and that was a big test.

“We’re in the hunt, there are three games to go, and we have a head-to-head with Inter at home. They’re difficult games for us, as the others have been.

“The UEFA licence? We’ll just do as well as we can, the important thing is to get enough points for the Europa League.

“We deserve to play to the end.”
