La Dea had the better of proceedings against Eusebio Di Francesco’s side but failed to take their chances.

The Bergamo side were then undone by Aleksandar Kolarov’s free kick, which went underneath the home team’s wall.

“It’s a defeat that hurts a lot,” Gasperini told reporters after the final whistle.

“We didn’t deserve that result. The team put in a performance, we wanted to start in the right way.

“We did it with our performance, but the result punished us.

“We played a good match and we were better in many aspects. I am very satisfied.

“We made three mistakes and lost. In general we did better than them and created much more.”
