Eusebio Di Francesco admits Roma need to improve despite a hard-fought win at Atalanta.

The Giallorossi won on the opening day of the Serie A season thanks to a free-kick by Aleksandar Kolarov.

However, despite praising his side’s character, the new Stadio Olimpico boss says his players must do better as an attacking force.

“I asked for a performance of character against a team that has done very well,” Di Francesco, who arrived from Sassuolo, commented.

“We had to be good in the last 20 minutes but the physical condition isn’t the best yet.

“But we didn’t concede, I saw a team that wanted to do well. It is an ugly win and this team can only grow.

“In the end, Atalanta only created one real chance. The rest of the time the team defended well.

“We could have moved the ball better but today we were better defending than attacking. From tomorrow we will be better on the attack.”

Roma were criticised for their performance in their last pre-season friendly, a 4-1 loss to Celta Vigo, but Di Francesco is happy with the work done in the off-season

“We have done great things other than the last match, when I made decisions in view of this match.

“I am looking to bring in my ideas, the desire to play.

“I can tell you that this stadium creates difficulties for anyone.”
