Marco Verratti tried to console Kylian Mbappé after his penalty kick miss ended France’s Euro 2020 run.

The PSG forward was the only one to miss in the shootout against Switzerland in a round of 16 clash on Monday.

Mbappé has ended the competition with zero goals scored and has apologised to French fans on social media.

“The sadness is immense after this elimination, we could not reach our goal,” he wrote.

“I know you fans have been disappointed, but I would still like to thank you for your support and for always believing in us.

“The most important thing will be to get up even stronger for the next challenges.

“Congratulations and good luck to Switzerland.”

Many of his PSG teammates commented on the post, including Neymar and Italy midfielder Marco Verratti.

Both the Brazilian and the Italian star reacted with a heart emoji, trying to console their disappointing teammate who was also defender by France coach Didier Deschamps after the game.

Verratti, 28, joined PSG in a €12m deal from Pescara in 2012. Mbappé joined him in Paris in 2017, paying €145m to secure his services.

“Nobody can be annoyed with him,” the former Juventus coach said.

“When you take the responsibility, it can happen. He is obviously very affected by it.”
