Former referee Luca Marelli has claimed Piero Giacomelli’s penalty decisions in Milan-Roma were ‘non-existent’ and ‘uncommentable’.

The 48-year-old former Serie A coach has claimed he wants to defend and ‘find an explanation’ for Giacomelli’s performance in the 3-3 draw between Milan and Roma at San Siro, but admitted he ‘can’t understand what he saw’.

“The risk this year was that we would reach the extreme compared to last year, when there had been many interventions from VAR,” he wrote on social media.

“The penalty for Roma is non-existent, that of Milan is uncommentable.

"If you really want to find an explanation for him, it could deceive you there and then. For the Milan one, I can’t understand what he saw.

“I find it hard to say no to those who talk about compensation. The problem is that of VAR.”
