Roma ended the year with a 3-2 win over Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

“I am satisfied, it was important to win today. There are no easy games in Serie A and we always have to fight for the tree points,” Fonseca told DAZN.

“We could have scored more goals, we created many goal-scoring opportunities. We had a tough moment, but we overcame it as a team,” he added.

The Portuguese tactician expects new signings in January.

“We are thinking about it, it will be important when we will return from holidays. We have many games ahead and we’ll have to do the right choices.”

The Giallorossi were criticised by media last week when they lost 4-1 away at Atalanta.

“There’s someone who wants to destroy Roma when we lose games. We accept fair criticisms. But as soon as we don’t win, someone willing to destroy Roma arrives. We are doing an important job to obtain what we want. At the beginning of the season nobody would believe Roma would sit in third place.”

Speaking to Sky Sport, Fonseca revealed his players didn’t react badly after he said the second half of the Atalanta clash was ‘men against boys.’

“They reacted well, it was important to understand what I wanted to say and they agreed with me,” Fonseca said.

Chris Smalling is not 100% and started the game from the bench.

“He has spent lot of time on the sidelienes, he is not fully fit yet, we need to help him recover, he is very important for the team.

“It’s important to have the best players fit. The fixture list is busy and it’s important to recover the best fitness now.”
