The coach confirmed in his press conference that Lorenzo Pellegrini and Jordan Veretout have recovered, so will play tomorrow.

Pedro Rodriguez is suspended following his red card against Sassuolo, while Pau Lopez will start in goal after Antonio Mirante had a problem in training.

“It’s going to be a difficult match against a strong team, but as always, the objective is to win,” said Fonseca.

“Bologna are having a good campaign, they are aggressive and we need a perfect performance to get the better of them.

“We made a lot of changes in the Europa League with CSKA Sofia, because we were already guaranteed first place in the group. I didn’t like losing, but this is a totally different game and there will be no influence.”

The tactician was asked what Roma are missing before they can compete with the likes of Inter and Juventus.

“Time. I think it’s clear to everyone that Inter and Juventus make different levels of investment compared to the other Serie A clubs, but we want to get closer to those teams. We have new owners, the squad has changed a great deal since the first day I arrived here, and we need time to become competitive again.

“I set the target for myself the first day of the season, which was to do better than last time. Seeing as last time we were fifth, that means top four and a Champions League spot.”

Fonseca will be in the stands tomorrow, as he sits out a one-match ban for dissent during the 0-0 draw with Sassuolo.

“I don’t want to seek alibis. I will just repeat what I said after the last game, that the incidents speak for themselves. I believe some situations are treated differently and last night the referee was not wrong in his decisions for Sassuolo-Benevento.”
