Austria coach Franco Foda believes ‘it makes no sense to play at Wembley’ against Italy and warns the Azzurri ‘must lose sooner or later.’

Austria and Italy meet at Wembley at 8 pm UK time on Saturday in the last 16 stage of Euro 2020.

However, the spread of the Delta COVID variant in England creates concern around Europe.

On Monday, Italy PM Mario Draghi said the Euro 2020 Finals should not be played where the virus is ‘spreading quickly’ and Austria coach Franco Foda shares his view.

“It makes no sense to play in London, health comes first,” the German coach told Kleine Zeitung.

“However, if you look at entry rules and considering the variant in England, it would be madness if our fans could not be there.

Both Italy and Austria Austria are on the amber list for entering England. That means people entering the country must take a COVID test before departure and quarantine for ten days. That makes it impossible for any people coming from abroad to watch the game at Wembley on Saturday.

“I hope UEFA changes something, it would be great if our fans could travel from Austria and spend a special moment with us,” Foda continued.

Italy will meet Austria after 11 straight wins and enjoying a 30-game unbeaten run. The Austrians have gone beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

“It seems impossible because they haven’t lost for ages,” Foda said.

“However, they must lose sooner or later, but we are still thrilled to have reached this stage.”
