“We couldn’t lose and didn’t want to lose, to send a signal to all the other nations. Italy are here, alive and have a great history, so we want to win at all costs,” the Roma star told Rai Sport.

“I thought we had a good game, though we suffered a little at the start. If you want to be ambitious, you mustn’t set yourself limits. You have to beat the strongest teams.

“It was an emotional moment to play here. It’s a shame they disallowed the second goal, which they told me was good. I thank all the people who came out to see us tonight.”
