Alessandro Florenzi maintains Italy “are on the right path and did everything except for the goal” in their 0-0 draw with Portugal.

The Azzurri dominated possession, had over twice as many passes and several scoring opportunities, but failed to get the Nations League victory they needed.

“Portugal didn’t cause us problems, it’s just that we’d have to be aliens to sustain that tempo for 90 minutes. We held it for the first half and a good portion of the second,” the Roma man told Rai Sport.

“Portugal kept the ball slightly more, but only had one shot on goal. We did everything we had to this evening except for the goal, where we were unlucky.

“We attacked the goal, we tried with determination to finish the moves off, so let’s not try to find the negatives.

“It’s clear from the last two games, the possession, the way we played together, the fluidity and scoring opportunities created that we are on the right path. This is the way forward.”

This was the first Italy game in Milan since the ill-fated 0-0 World Cup play-off draw with Sweden a year ago.

“Returning to San Siro was not easy and we thank the fans for cheering us on for 90 minutes. We’re getting back on our feet in the right way and the end of the Nations League has to be the beginning of a new era, approaching the next games with this style.”
