Fiorentina director Joe Barone hit back at Roma coach Jose Mourinho after complaints about the refereeing. ‘Why create controversy where it doesn’t exist? That was a penalty.’

Mourinho was furious with the officials, particularly the VAR, after a 2-0 Giallorossi defeat at the Stadio Franchi on Monday evening.

The issue at the centre of the discussion is the penalty awarded to Fiorentina after four minutes for a Rick Karsdorp challenge on Nico Gonzalez.

“That was a penalty and we all saw it perfectly well, it was a great performance and the result is fair,” Barone told reporters.

“Why create controversy where it doesn’t exist? VAR works very well, Italian football represents one of the models in world football on that score.”

The contact from Karsdorp on Gonzalez was minimal, leading some to suggest VAR should not have intervened for an on-field review.

  1. 😂😂 until a call
Like this happens to Fiorentina!! Then he’ll be singing a different tune!! If calls like this become the norm in football, this game will be finished!! It’s getting out of hand now and the diving will only get worse when calls like this are made. Look at the Bologna game last weekend, same thing. Even x referees are calling these pens B.S

  2. Roma didn’t create the controversy, Referee did. Mou was aiming at the ref, not Fiorentina. So why does Fiorentina feel the need to jump into this conversation? Especially they are the ones who received the favoured call?

  3. well the officials were suspended again, so Mourinho was once again vindicated for criticism directed towards officials. (SIXTH TIME NOW officials have been suspended for bad calls against Roma)

  4. Roma played sooooo badly in that game I’m surprised he is wingeing at the referee and not blaming himself or his players.
