Former Italian international Matteo Ferrari is on the verge of signing a contract with Montreal Impact, the club have confirmed.

“We had an unanticipated meeting with Matteo while in Europe,” said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis.

“He is not currently under contract with us, but he wants to play in MLS and wants to join the Impact. We are excited that he will be joining the club.

“We know the level of his game and what he can bring to the team. The details of a potential deal have to be finalized with the league, but we are confident that it can get done quickly.”

Ferrari is a free agent after spending the last two seasons in Turkey with Besiktas.

The centre-back, now 32, won 11 caps for Italy and played for clubs such as Inter, Parma, Roma, Genoa and Everton earlier in his career.
