The Nerazzurri will travel to Glasgow in February to meet Ronny Deila’s Hoops, who sit six points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic have a history with Inter, having beaten Helenio Herrera’s ‘Grande Inter’ in the 1967 European Cup final, and Fassone has praised the club’s history.

“Celtic have a great tradition,” the director general explained to Mediaset.

“The game will be difficult, but it would have been difficult whoever we had drawn.

“We have to try and win the competition, as the Europa League is one of the paths to get into the Champions League.

“There are five challenging rounds between now and Warsaw [the venue for the final], starting with this.

“We’ll do everything we can to accomplish our goal.”

Fassone also spoke about the club’s plans for the January transfer market, with the Beneamata currently languishing in 12th place in Serie A.

“We’ve got some pressure on us because of a league position which we didn’t think we’d have at the beginning of the season, now we have to get points and move up the table.

“We have to discuss [the transfer market] with the Coach [Roberto Mancini], the director general and the President [Erick Thohir].

“We’ve been clear with Mancini from the beginning, and he’s been on board with the project – we have to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.

“I spoke with the leaders of UEFA here in Nyon, we have to be careful not to breach the regulations with spending in January.

“All the teams that are competing in the Europa League and the Champions League are fighting on two fronts, now for a while we won’t have this problem.

“We have to look at the next five games of the season and try to get as many points as possible. When we get to the beginning of February we’ll look at the table and the Coach will make the necessary decisions.”
