Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has welcomed a Ukrainian mother and her eight-year-old son into his home after they fled the war.

The Serie A player wanted to do his part to help families escaping the bombing after Russia’s armed invasion of a sovereign country.

He had room in his house and is hosting Hanna and her son Milan, who escaped from Dnipro after the first Russian air strikes on March 11.

Little Milan is a football fan, so after gifting the Empoli jersey, Vicario is now also trying to find a local football school where the boy can resume some sense of normality and make new friends.

His father remained behind to fight in Ukraine and remains in contact with the family via video calls.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that over 10 million people have fled their homes in Ukraine following the Russian invasion, with almost four million leaving the country.
