Empoli President Fabrizio Corsi insists Bayern Munich haven’t asked for Guglielmo Vicario directly but have been monitoring the Italian goalkeeper since January.

The 26-year-old is one of the emerging goalkeepers in Serie A and there were reports of interest from the Bavarians in the January transfer window.

Corsi confirmed in an interview with TMW that Bayern have been monitoring Vicario for a few weeks.

“Nobody from Bayern knocked on our door, but we know that it’s a name they’ve been considering since January,” he said.

“There have been no contacts. It’s amazing to watch this guy on the pitch but especially spending a few minutes talking to him. He must be protected from certain rumours.

“The final part of the season is decisive for him and us. He’s played almost 60 games from last season, we have a clear idea, but balance is needed.”

Vicario has conceded 29 goals in 23 Serie A games this season, keeping seven clean sheets. His Empoli side sit 12th in Serie A, only four points below a European placement and 11 above the relegation zone.

Repubblica and Tuttosport reported in January that Bayern had offered €20m for the Italian goalkeeper who has also been monitored by Fabio Paratici at Tottenham.

Corsi confirmed Fiorentina have never shown interest in Vicario: “Never, and we talk every week.”

On Sunday, they face runaway leaders Napoli with Luciano Spalletti returning to the Stadio Castellani, where he ended his playing career, beginning his coaching career at the end of the 90s.

“I hope Empoli will be up t the task, attitude will be crucial,” said Corsi.

“I’ve spoken to Spalletti and we agreed that it’s better not to talk about any target, don’t even name certain things. I can only congratulate him, he has become one of the most important coaches in football’s history. We are happy for him because he started from here.”
