“Could I go back to Milan?” El Shaarawy considered, as he was officially presented.

“Milan own my registration, after Monaco we talked with [joint-CEO Adriano] Galliani and we decided that it was the right move.

“Rome were my priority. I decided with Milan, I immediately felt confidence from [sporting director Walter] Sabatini and the Coach [Luciano Spalletti].

“I’m glad I came here, my aim is to start well and give my best.

“I did some things wrong with Milan, but I also grew. Roma have a demanding fanbase, but as players we’re used to it.

“There are so many bad things that have been said about me, but I take it in my stride. Football is my life.

“I found a calm dressing room, and received a nice welcome from the fans and my teammates.

“We’re not going through a good period, but there’s a strong squad here with quality players, and two leaders in [Francesco] Totti and [Daniele] De Rossi who are champions.

“I’m here to do my best for the team, we want to get great results.”

El Shaarawy was then asked where he’d prefer to play.

“I’d rather play on the left wing, but the Coach can also use me as a fifth midfielder, it’s all good. I can also play in the front-two, what’s important is to find consistency, the role isn’t a big problem.

“It’s up to me, but this can be a turning point where I can start again and reach great levels.

“My goal is to go to the European Championships, but to do that I have to do well with Roma.”
