The Nerazzurri travel to face the Giallorossi in Sunday’s Serie A match at Stadio Olimpico, with the 44-year-old taking time to discuss various transfer dealings between the two clubs.

He admitted that Inter had been interested in signing Bosnian forward Dzeko, but only if they had allowed Mauro Icardi to leave first.

“He is a great player and he defiintely would have fitted in well at Inter,” Ausilio said of Dzeko. “But he was an alternative to Icardi and we never thought about selling him.”

The director then explained the thinking behind allowing Jesus to leave the club temporarily, despite having denied him the opportunity to make the same move in January.

“Sabatini’s courting of him began a long time ago. We talked about him in January, but at that moment we preferred not to sell him because we were well placed in the League and we didn’t think it was right to solve the problem of a direct rival.

“In the summer, Roma asked again and we reached an agreement.”

Ausilio also revealed that Inter had wanted to sign Diego Perotti, then at Genoa before he joined Roma in 2016, last year.

“I asked Genoa about him in the summer of 2015. Mancini liked him a lot and on the last day of the August window, after Sampdoria said no for Eder, we tried to bring the Argentine to Milan.

“We didn’t manage to do it and we signed Ljajic.”

Finally, the Inter transfer chief admitted the club had wanted to sign Radja Nainggolan but that the situation was too complicated.

“Someone wanted to make us believe that there was potential for a deal because the player was still co-owned [by Cagliari].

“But I knew that he was important for Roma and the Giallorossi directors would not have let him escape.

“We liked him, I don’t hide it, but we didn’t want to enter into a complicated situation.”
