Edin Dzeko admits “it’s difficult to explain” Roma’s struggles in Serie A compared to their Champions League form.

The Giallorossi were beaten by Real Madrid in the Bernabeu, but in their next two European games they’ve scored eight goals without reply.

Domestically though the capital club are struggling, sitting ninth after no wins in three games.

Domestically though the capital club are struggling, sitting ninth after no wins in three games.

“It’s difficult to explain,” Dzeko said in the Press conference ahead of the CSKA Moscow match.

“We’ve done very well in the Champions League this year, with the exception of Madrid, maybe it’s because there are fewer matches in Europe and we need to give everything.

“We should do the same in Serie A, but maybe some think it’s easy to win against Bologna, Spal and Chievo when that’s not the case.

“Serie A is a difficult, tactical league and you always have to give 100 per cent.

“Last year we all saw how good it is to play in the Champions League and reaching the semi-finals was even better.

“Winning tomorrow could see us through. If you play in the Champions League for 12 months you always have to give everything.

“We want to do as well as possible.”

While Dzeko has been in fine form in the Champions League, he’s struggling to score domestically.

“I’m the first to be unhappy when I don’t score. I’ve scored more goals in the Champions League than in Serie A and I need to improve because I’ve missed too many chances.”

Patrik Schick was supposed to lift the goalscoring burden from his Bosnian teammate, but he’s struggling to find the back of the net.

“I remember my first year here,” Dzeko pointed out.

“He’s younger than I was, and in his year at Sampdoria we saw what he can do. He needs to start with himself, give more in training and in the matches, and we more experienced players need to help him.

“He’s been unlucky at times, like against Frosinone where he’d have scored were it not for a great save. For a striker a goal can change a lot.”
