Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma assures the club has “a great future ahead of it”.

The Rossoneri were bought by a Chinese consortium in April, led by Yonghong Li, and embarked on a big summer transfer campaign which saw the likes of Leonardo Bonucci, Nikola Kalinic and Lucas Biglia arrive.

While the start to the season hasn’t been great, the young ‘keeper is convinced the squad will come good in the end.

While the start to the season hasn’t been great, the young ‘keeper is convinced the squad will come good in the end.

“It’s a squad that has changed so much,” Donnarumma explained to UEFA’s official website.

“Great players were bought in the summer, we knew it wouldn’t be easy for them to acclimatise right away.

“There’s always a lot of work to be done to integrate them in the best way.

“We’re a very young team and there’s talent here. I think Milan has a great future ahead of it.”

The Diavolo face Austria Vienna in the Europa League tonight, and will qualify for the Last 32 with a win.

“Europe is where Milan deserves to be, the place where Milan has to be. It’s an indescribable emotion for me to play with the Rossoneri in Europe. Right from the start there’s a little bit more tension.”

Despite being from Campania, the Italian international grew up supporting Milan.

“I started playing on a blaze pitch, that’s where I took my first steps and it helped me grow a lot,” Donnarumma explained.

“I’ve always been a passionate Milan fan, when they’d miss a penalty I’d cry or it would be a disaster, not least because my mum is Neapolitan.

“Milan-Napoli in my house was a real spectacle!

“I always dreamed of playing for Milan as a kid, so I’m honoured to be part of this and I’ll give my all for this club. I’m so proud to wear this shirt.”

Donnarumma was famously given his debut against Sassuolo at the age of 16, having first been in the squad at 15.

“I still can’t believe it. I started with [Sinisa] Mihajlovic as the third goalkeeper. I always trained well and the boss believed in me.

“Then one day he called me into the dressing room and decided to play me. I felt ready, I wasn’t scared to play.

“I was surprised, yes, but not scared because I really wanted to prove myself.”
