There were certainly similarities to the two penalty incidents in FiorentinaInter and RomaNapoli, but also a good reason why only one was revoked after a VAR review.

Viola fans were furious last night during the 4-3 home defeat to Inter when a spot-kick was given for Pietro Terracciano crashing into Lautaro Martinez, despite replays suggesting he got a fingertip to the ball.

There was a similar situation at the Stadio Olimpico this evening when Rui Patricio went for the ball with Tanguy Ndombele and initially the referee had awarded a penalty.

However, he revoked the decision following an on-field VAR review.

Although similar, they were not identical, because while Terracciano did get a fingertip to the ball, it did not significantly change the direction of the sphere and it was still well within the reach of Lautaro Martinez for a follow-up.

Replays show that Rui Patricio got several fingers to the ball and pushed it beyond Ndombele, making a big change to its direction.

“There was a big difference between the incidents,” explained DAZN refereeing pundit Luca Marelli.

“We saw yesterday the ball continued practically in the same direction, whereas this time the ball moved significantly from vertical to horizontal.”

  1. Biggest difference I would suggest is called
Marotta and not how many fingers the goal keepers had in the ball ;P

  2. Whether or not the ball deviated is irrelevant as any fan knows… simply did the keeper touch the ball before or at the same time as making contact with the player? The answer is the same in both cases and the correct decision given after a VAR review in the Roma case only. Now why is it that a very simple overturn decision was made in one case but not the other? What are we watching here?
