Sassuolo boss Eusebio Di Francesco says he will attempt to reunite Domenico Berardi with the Italian Football Federation.

The 19-year-old is currently banned until March for international selection after failing to respond to a call-up to the Under-19 side last summer.

Italy Under-21 boss Gigi Di Biagio recently said he’s expecting an apology from the attacker before considering him for selection in the future.

“When I was a player, it was my dream to be called up for Italy,” Di Francesco commented. “An ambition to always improve is fundamental and the national shirt can motivate you.

“Domenico has already understood that he has made a mistake. He has a particular character, but nobody knows that more than me.

“I hope to convince him to take a step backwards.”

Berardi has caught the eye in the last seven days. He netted a hat-trick against Sampdoria before striking the equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Roma.

“I got to know Berardi when he was in the Primavera set-up,” Di Francesco added. “He has great quality and his carefreeness helps him to play well.”

Berardi, co-owned with Juventus, has six goals in eight Serie A games this term.
