The former Lazio, Juventus and Milan man has claimed the games at the height of summer doesn’t change anything for the players, who would have to play friendly matches on the other side of the world anyway.

“The players can’t complain,” he told Il Mattino. “I remember when they brought us to play in Leon, Mexico, at the height of summer.

“There were 42 degrees and it was only a friendly match. [Marco] De Marchi and [Gianluca] Luppi almost needed a respirator in the middle of the first half.

“I enjoy the summer games, they are real matches, certainly with more pauses but much better than training with the representatives of the lumberjacks in the mountains and you win 12-0 but risk getting hurt just as they do now.

“In a normal summer, they would travel to the other side of the world to play against Manchester City or Chelsea, only five or six days into the summer retreat.

“At least now they send a signal to the people. To ordinary people who are in difficulty, who have to walk kilometres just to get to work and might need the distraction of watching some football on TV in these days of June and July.”
