Roma’s Mattia Destro believes he has made a good case to be selected in Italy’s World Cup squad for the summer.

The Giallorossi forward added that it was every player’s dream to play at world football’s showpiece event but said he has not recently heard from Azzurri Coach Cesare Prandelli.

“It’s an important opportunity and a dream for all players,” Destro told Sky Sport today.

“It is the pinnacle for a player during his career. I think I have demonstrated my quality and what I am capable of.

“Because of the injury I’ve had I’ve played less, but I hope to be available for these final two matches of the season.

“Prandelli? No, I haven’t heard from him. He will make his assessments and then decide.

“The Champions League and the World Cup? If someone had offered me that a year ago I would have signed! It was difficult for me after my operation, but I have worked hard and you can see the results.”

The 23-year-old was then asked about his relationship with Mario Balotelli.

“Balotelli? We have a good relationship, we have grown up together. We took our first steps as professionals together.”
