Gigi Del Neri is the Coach who first took Chievo into Serie A and he believes Giampiero Ventura is the “right man” to keep them there.
The Flying Donkeys sacked Rolando Maran at the end of April and then fired his replacement Lorenzo D’Anna last week, hiring former Italy boss Ventura.
“The Chievo Miracle was, I think, an indestructible memory,” Del Neri told RMC Sport of that debut top flight campaign in 2001-02.
“We’ll never see the likes of that again. To do what we did was like winning the lottery.”

This is a tougher season than ever before, as they started from -3 due to false accounting charges.
“After D’Anna was fired, I heard a few rumours around me, but I think Ventura is the right man to take Chievo forward at this moment.
“It’s very complicated this term, because the newly-promoted clubs all have some very interesting squads. Chievo still have to cancel out the points penalty, but I think they have what it takes to survive.
“Ventura was not the problem with the Nazionale. We can’t forget 35 years of the man’s career just because of two bad games. Ventura is a friend and I always tried to learn from him. He is very fired up and I’m convinced he’ll do well with Chievo.”
There are several of Del Neri’s old players who have gone on to work as Coaches, including D’Anna, Eugenio Corini and Moreno Longo.
“Perhaps they were destined to become Coaches, as they always trained with enthusiasm and a professional attitude. I hope they can all enjoy their careers as much as I did.”
