“I saw improvements last week against Parma and the lads tried to the end, so I would’ve said the same even if they hadn’t equalised,” De Zerbi told Sassuolo Channel.

“It wasn’t our best performance, but it was better than we’ve had recently, especially against a side that defended in their own penalty area for the last 20 minutes.”

Lazio will take a very different approach to the game tomorrow, especially after their 3-0 Derby della Capitale triumph against Roma.

“When we play against the top seven, it’s never even on paper, but if we prove ourselves on the pitch, then we can get the three points. We mustn’t go out there timid or thinking we won’t get a result.

“Lazio have been doing very well in recent years, second only in consistency to Juventus, as they have a strong identity, quality, physicality and like us have been working together for a long time. That is an advantage, especially this season.”

Jeremie Boga, Maxime Lopez and Manuel Locatelli are back from injury, but Domenico Berardi, Medhi Bourabia and suspended Vlad Chiriches miss out.

There is only one point separating these teams going into the midway stage of the season, as Lazio have 31 and Sassuolo 30.

“It’s a very balanced league this season with seven teams who could win the Scudetto, then others who can challenge for the Champions League.

“Behind those, there’s us, Sampdoria, Verona and Benevento. Even with our problems, we are trying to make our presence felt and a result tomorrow would be a new record first half of the season for Sassuolo.”
