Speaking following the final whistle at the Stadio Olimpico, the Dutch defender particularly praised the way he and his teammates communicated with one another on the pitch.

“We did very well as a team. At the beginning we worked hard on our communication,” De Vrij told reporters.

“They had a lot of possession but as long as it’s not dangerous that’s fine.

“We were good on the counter, we did very well to get two goals before the interval.

“Then, we came back on and really hurt them with two more goals.”

Following the convincing win over the Rossoneri, Lazio now have seven points out of a possible nine.

On Thursday, they begin their Europa League campaign with a trip to De Vrij's homeland to face Vitesse Arnhem.
